Health Level Seven International (HL7) is the global authority on standards for interoperability of health information technology with members in over 55 countries. By joining HL7, you gain access to our standards, and you help us to create the best and most widely used standards in healthcare.

Health Level Seven (HL7), is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization involved in development of international healthcare informatics interoperability standards."HL7" is also used to refer to some of the specific standards created by the organization (e.g., HL7 v2.x, v3.0, HL7 RIM).

HL7 and its members provide a framework (and related standards) for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information. v2.x of the standards, which support clinical practice and the management, delivery, and evaluation of health services, are the most commonly used in the world.

The name "Health Level-7"

The name "Health Level-7" is a reference to the seventh layer of the ISO OSI Reference model also known as the application layer. The name indicates that HL7 focuses on application layer protocols for the health care domain, independent of lower layers. HL7 effectively considers all lower layers merely as tools.

HIMSS: Oracle boosts HIE platform with integration, standards support

Oracle Health Information Exchange has expanded support for federal and global standards, such as the Connect architecture and Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) specifications, the company announced last week at HIMSS11 in Orlando, Fla.

Oracle Health Information Exchange is an open-architecture health information exchange (HIE) platform that enables healthcare organizations and government agencies to manage and share health data across networks, according to Oracle, of Redwood Shores, Calif.

The platform provides provides communication, system integration, enterprise master person indexing, consent management and enforcement, access auditing, a clinical data and document repository and record locator services.

The Oracle Health Information Exchange includes:

  • Oracle Health Sciences Information Gateway, which enables secure communications over the internet to safeguard in-transit protected health information (PHI);
  • Oracle Healthcare Master Person Index to provide a single point of reference to information about a patient, clinician or other entity within a healthcare organization or HIE;
  • Oracle Health Sciences Integration Engine, to integrate data across disparate clinical and administrative systems via HL7 messaging.

Also at HIMSS11, Oracle introduced the Oracle Health Sciences Information Manager, supporting technology for EHR and HIE systems that aggregates and manages data, and provides secure access and exchange of PHI. In addition, it handles consent management and auditing for regulatory compliance.

Oracle Health Sciences Information Manager is deployed via an Oracle virtual machine (VM) template, which provides pre-installed and pre-configured software images, according to the company.

The information manager is integrated with Oracle Health Sciences Information Gateway and is included in the latest generation of Oracle HIE.
